General Summary of Position
Working under the direction of a Registered Nurse utilizes the skills gained as a student in a Nursing degree program to assist the Registered Nurse in the care of a group of patients.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Collects and documents pertinent patient information following policy guidelines including vital signs weights heights and patient care activities.
  • Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health mission vision goals objectives and patient care philosophy. Demonstrates effective communication and works in collaboration with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Collaborates with Registered nurse to identify and formulate nursing plan of care and organize own patient care assignment to provide safe efficient care.
  • Performs basic procedures such as wound care and simple dressing changes suctioning urinary catheter insertion and removal maintenance of drainage devices. Collects specimens including urine stool sputum and blood. Provides respiratory care support including coughing deep breathing and set-up of oxygen equipment and pulse oximetry under supervision of RN.
  • Performs intravenous catheter insertions changes of I.V. sites and dressings and routine inspection of sites as needed. Performs routine blood drawing function under supervision of RN.
  • Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients families staff and other departments to the Registered Nurse. Responds to questions from patient families and significant others in a prompt courteous positive manner referring them to appropriate personnel if necessary.
  • Attends mandatory training sessions staff meetings and town hall meetings. Completes all mandatory education requirements on time.
  • Assists with transport of patients specimens equipment and supplies as appropriate. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assists patient with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as dressing cleaning feeding positioning and movement.
  • Monitors receives and stocks equipment and supplies. Obtains emergency equipment and supplies as necessary.
  • Demonstrates the appropriate level of urgency during critical situations.
  • Initiates and assists in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Maintains the cleanliness and safety of patient room environment and equipment in the appropriate manner. Notifies appropriate personnel as needed when these issues cannot be immediately resolved.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Provides evaluation of Student Nurse Extern Role

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program required and
  • Students entering their final year or currently in their final year of nursing school. required and
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Nursing or the equivalent course. required

Experience

  • Prior work experience not required

Licenses and Certifications

  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant by the Maryland Board of Nursing for Maryland practice sites. Upon Hire required and
  • CNA certification NOT required for Washington DC practice sites. and
  • DL - Valid State Driver's License in good standing Upon Hire required and
  • BLS - Basic Life Support Current Healthcare provider BLS certification PRIOR to start date required

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills required.

This position has a hiring range of

USD $18.00 - USD $29.74 /Hr.
