The Team

The Cariboo Fire Centre Communications team is a small group made up of the Community Engagement Specialist, Communications Specialist and Communications Assistant. We work closely with every program area and all four zones in the Cariboo Fire Centre to support internal and external communications. Our team is passionate about supporting our community with accurate and engaging information on wildfire preparedness, prevention and response information.

The Role

As a Communications Assistant at BC Wildfire Service, you will play a key role in keeping both staff and the public informed by assisting with internal communications, writing for social media, and supporting external communications and public outreach efforts. Your work directly impacts the community by ensuring citizens and partners stay up to date on important fire-related information. The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is the Province of BC’s primary emergency response organization. It operates year-round to deliver its mandate for wildfire management and response to natural hazard emergencies. The BCWS operates provincially, delivering services through six fire centres, thirty-three zones and two provincial centres in Kamloops and Victoria.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Diploma or higher in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field; or
  • Grade 12 or equivalent and 2 years related experience in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 driver licence or equivalent.

Preference may be given to the applicants with the following:

  • A Technical Diploma or higher in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
  • Experience working respectfully, knowledgeably and effectively with Indigenous People and First Nations communities.
  • Current BCWS certification as Information Assistant or higher within the Incident Command System.
  • Experience in the role of Information Officer within a Fire Centre RWCC in the last five (5) years.
  • Experience working with, a combination of, the following applications:
    • Adobe Suite
    • Content Management System (e.g., Wordpress, CMS Lite)
    • Electronic mailout software (e.g., Envoke., MailChimp)

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and/or overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
  • Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry (Note: It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the specific security screening requirements pertaining to the position).

This is a seasonal opportunity starting approximately February 2026 ending October 30th, 2026 with the possibility of yearly recall. Start and end dates are flexible.
